This island can be visited by either taking an organised tour excursion which includes a coach trip of the island and can be booked via the many tour offices in Alykes & Alykanas or Zakynthos Town. If you're more adventurous you can do it yourself by driving or taking a taxi to the port of St Nikolas in Skinari which is on the north coast about 20 minutes from Alykes and then taking the ferry. The ferryboat departs daily during the summer season leaving Skinari at 9:45 and returning around 19:15 and takes about 75 minutes.

Greece is a family loving nation and wherever you go the children will be given attention. Most restaurants and bars have children’s play areas or games. In the resort of Alykes there is a new public children’s park which is free, safe and secure. Open all day and floodlit for the evenings it has plenty to keep the kids occupied with swings, slides, climbing frames etc. The park is located at the salt flats, on the main Alykes road just before Astoria Hotel. Of course there is also the beach which is sandy and has shallow waters ideal for kids.
» I am travelling with a baby; can I buy nappies, food and milk in the resort?
It is worth noting that baby milk for 0-6mth old babies can only be bought in chemists/pharmacies in Greece and not in supermarkets. Most makes are available but is worth checking with the company of the milk you use before travelling as it is often known by another name in European countries. Nappies are widely available in all supermarkets but baby food is limited to nestle jars or tins of powdered foods in sweet flavours only.
» Is there a chemist/pharmacy in Alykes or Alykanas?
Yes there is now a pharmacy located on the main road close to Letsos Supermarket in Alykanas. There is also a pharmacy in Katastari which is a 10 min walk from Alykes and is now open 7days a week.
» Are there any doctors in the resorts?
Yes. There are private doctor’s surgeries in both Alykes and Alykanas but be aware that you will be asked to pay for any treatment and then claim it back on your holiday insurance. There is also a public health centre which is free of charge in the village of Kallithea, about 5km away and has an A&E room and is fully equipped and staffed 24hrs a day.
» Are cigarettes cheaper in the resort or at the airport?
This question often arises. Cigarettes are the same price wherever you buy them this is because the prices are set by the Greek government and are displayed on the packets. No one is able to offer different prices so whether you buy them in the local tourist shop, supermarket or at the airport the price is exactly the same.
